2015 Workshop Description

Afternoon Session — Instructor: David Corbett

Beyond Good & Evil: Using Moral Argument to Develop Plot and Character

In this lecture, David will define the various forms of moral argument used in narrative — Right vs. Wrong, Redemption/Transformation, Tragedy, Pathos, Irony/Satire, and Black Comedy—and explore how each provides a unique way to stage conflict, explore character, and structure the story.

The thematic focus throughout will be recognition that conflict in a story is not merely between individuals, but between distinct and irreconcilable ways of life and views of the human condition.
