Nancy Lord, Alaska's Writer Laureate, is the author of three short story collections (most recently The Man Who Swam with Beavers) and four books of literary nonfiction (Fishcamp, Green Alaska, Beluga Days, and, most recently, Rock, Water, Wild: An Alaskan Life.) She is currently at work on a literary nonfiction work about how northern communities are coping with and adapting to climate change. Her interests as a writer tend toward place, the environment, and the intersections between nature and culture.

Nancy holds a B.A. from Hampshire College and an M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College. She teaches part-time at the Kachemak Bay branch of the University of Alaska Anchorage and in UAA's low-residency M.F.A. program. She has received fellowships from the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Rasmuson Foundation, and numerous artist residency programs. She formerly fished commercially for salmon and has more recently worked as a naturalist and historian on adventure cruise ships. She enjoys beach walks, kayaking, and berry picking.
